May 2016 Meeting

The scheduled demonstrator Mrs. Anne Buchan had to cancel due to ill health so our club member and area demonstrator Gill Garrow stepped into the breach, her title was ‘Seasonal Delights’.

Gill started by taking us on a floral picnic with an arrangement in a basket using pink sprayed silver birch twigs with pink alstoemeria, eustoma, roses and gerbera complimented by yellow carnations. To complete the design Gill added a second placement of a floral ice cream gateau with interesting wood veneer swirls.

Next we were in the greenhouse using seed boxes as containers for a tapestry design with chrysanthemums, tulips, carnations and a variety of foliage, a second placement was added at the end.

One of the seasonal delights in Elgin is the armature musical theatre production, this year it was Sister Act so Gill produced her floral tribute to there efforts, using a tall container with aspidistra leaves, gypsophila, chincherinchee, white roses and cala lilies.

Another basket formed the basis for a long low flowing arrangement with seasonal pussy willows, ruscus, leather leaf ferns and rhododendron foliage together with peach coloured parrot tulips, eustoma and roses.

The final design was the seasonal delight of spring clearing so the design was in a box on a chest of draws and Gill used some magnificent magnolia from her garden as well as clematis with tulips, trachelium, gerbera, peony roses and vanda orchids. Gill then show us how to use each individual bloom of the orchid spray by cutting, sealing and gluing them on to clematis sprays to give a different and pleasing look.

Everyone enjoyed the evening and Davina Farquhar gave a hearty vote of thanks. Members were reminded that the June meeting is 7th which is the first Tuesday.
